José A. Ceja is a former felony prosecutor from Tucson, Arizona who has been an associate at Scheiner Law Group since 2010. As a prosecutor, Mr. Ceja first-chaired over 25 jury trials, including sexual assaults and violent crimes, and successfully briefed and argued a case in front of the full 9-member panel of the Arizona Supreme Court. Mr. Ceja has put his considerable experience as a prosecutor to good use as a Houston sexual assault lawyer, obtaining outstanding results for Scheiner Law Group’s clients, ranging from dismissals to acquittals and grand jury "no bills." In 2012 alone, Mr. Ceja obtained two grand jury "no bills" for clients facing allegations of sexual assault. Mr. Ceja is fluent in Spanish and highly knowledgeable in search and seizure law, an area of expertise that is critical to any sexual assault attorney. Mr. Ceja is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association (HCCLA) and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (TCDLA), and the Houston Young Lawyer's Association (HYLA). In his spare time, Mr. Ceja enjoys reading books about history and science, traveling, and homebrewing. An avid exerciser, Mr. Ceja also enjoys running, yoga, spinning, and Crossfit.

Education

Mr. Ceja earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Arizona, James E. Rogers College of Law. While in law school, Mr. Ceja clerked for the Hon. Bernardo Velasco (United States District Court – Southern District of Arizona), as well as the legal department of the Tucson Police Department. Since moving to Texas, Mr. Ceja completed the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association Trial College in Huntsville, Texas, and the Trial Lawyers College Psychodrama Program in Round Top, Texas, sponsored by The Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Project and Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyer's College. Mr. Ceja earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism and Political Science from the University of Arizona. As an undergraduate, Mr. Ceja served as assistant news editor for the largest student-run newspaper in the country, “The Arizona Wildcat,” and received the “Outstanding Senior Award” from the University of Arizona Journalism Department. He was also a frequent contributor to the Arizona Daily Star, writing unsigned editorials for the newspaper’s editorial page. Mr. Ceja became interested in the practice of law as an undergraduate while taking courses in investigative journalism and the law of the press. After entering law school, Mr. Ceja was drawn to the excitement and energy of trial work. After working for over three years as a prosecutor, he now puts his enthusiasm and experience to work for Scheiner Law Group as one of the attorneys who work with clients charged with sexual assault offenses.
